In courtyard hotels credit cards are often not accepted and air-conditioning is not always standard. Check when booking


  1. Hotel Côté Cour S. L.

    An über-stylish courtyard home, with a lily pond at its center. Its 14 bedrooms may be small, but they are tastefully furnished with antiques. The 21st century can be seen in the shape of WiFi and flat-screen televisions. Breakfast is served in the beautifully decorated East-meets-West lounge.

  2. Sweet Garden Hostel

    Peaceful, family-run hostel in a converted courtyard residence close to Dong Si Shi Tiao subway offers simple single, double, and 4–6 bed dorm rooms. Staff speak little English but arrange bike hire, ticket booking services, and even airport pick-up.

  3. 4 Banqiao

    Tucked away in Banqiao Hutong, this traditional courtyard-style guesthouse is located near Dongzhimen and Guijie (Ghost Street). It offers 18 clean rooms with traditional Chinese furniture.

  4. Bamboo Garden Hotel

    Close to the lakes, this is the oldest of Beijing’s traditional hotels, with the largest and most elaborate courtyards, plus rockeries and covered pathways.

  5. Hao Yuan Guesthouse

    Small, but possibly the most obscure, and possibly most pleasant courtyard hotel in Beijing. Rooms in the tree-shaded rear courtyard are exquisite. Walking distance to Wangfujing.

  6. Hejing Fu Hotel

    One of the largest courtyard hotels in town, Hejing Fu occupies three courtyards in total, each dotted with intricately carved statuary. Suites are appointed with luxurious trappings that reflect the house’s imperial pedigree.

  7. Lu Song Yuan Hotel

    The details are similar to those in other courtyard hotels, but here they add up to a more comfortable atmosphere. Rooms range from cheap youth hostel-style facilities to suites. There’s also a teahouse and well-stocked bookshelves.

  8. Qomolangma Hotel

    A few minutes’ walk from the Drum and Bell Towers and located in a former Buddhist temple, this courtyard hotel is full of character. Simple, cosy rooms have Ming-style furniture.

  9. Kelly’s Courtyard

    This stylish hostel in a historic hutong near Xidan and the financial district is owned by a travel-loving Chinese fashion designer and her husband.

  10. Red Lantern House

    The Red Lantern House occupies a main building and two pretty court-yards. It is family-owned and only a stone’s throw away from the bars of Hou Hai.
