“Who would want to read a book by me?” That’s what I blurted out when someone gently suggested I should write a book. I followed with: “I’m not sure I would read a book by me.” After careful prodding, I came to recognize that perhaps I did have ideas to share that others would find useful. And now, some two years later, the remarkable journey of writing a book has come to an end.

Michele Glorie, our head of corporate communications, was by my side at every turn—this book would not have happened without her smart guidance and hard work. Partnering with Seth Schulman, my contributing editor, has also been a joy. Seth listened to my story, asked probing questions, and helped me choose the right words to convey my reflections on almost 40 years of work at Kronos. I send a heartfelt thank you to my agent, Jim Levine, for his interest and insight, and also for leading me to Casey Ebro at McGraw-Hill, whose keen editorial eye has made this a much better book.

So many leaders, managers, and employees at Kronos have contributed to this book, whether by agreeing to sit for interviews, responding to requests for information, or reviewing parts or all of the book at various stages. Thank you so much for your generosity of time and spirit—I truly appreciate it. I also wish to thank the Kronos leadership team past and present, as well as our current and past board members for the support they’ve provided me over the years. A special thank you goes out to my longtime assistant at Kronos, Joanne Johansen. It would be impossible to describe all that Joanne has done for me and my family—she is simply the kindest, most thoughtful, most caring person I know!

My career at Kronos wouldn’t have been possible without my wife of 35 years. Susan, you are a perfect partner! Thank you for your endless support and encouragement. My daughters, Danielle and Hillary, have taught me priceless lessons about the importance and value of work-life balance. They continue to bring me joy as they expand their own families. I cherish the presence in my life of my four siblings, Mark, Brent, Ross, and Alice, and their families. To Mark, who founded Kronos in 1977: you guided me expertly during our decades working together, always finding the right balance between the roles of company leader, boss, and brother. If anyone deserves credit for Kronos’s success, it’s you! I also wish to acknowledge my parents, Pearl and Jack Ain, whose example of love, altruism, and service to the community continues to inspire me. My thanks go out as well to my many friends, who make life so much fun. You know who you are!

Writing this book afforded me many blessings, but the greatest one was the chance to connect with Kronites in new and interesting ways. Building a strong culture requires constant care, vigilance, and hard work, but it becomes an inspired effort when you’re surrounded by so many amazing people. To Kronites everywhere: I genuinely care about each and every one of you. Our company’s success and the success of our customers owes to you. I always enjoy seeing and interacting with you at our offices around the world. You provide me with energy and a sense of purpose each and every day, and for that reason, I dedicate this book to you.
