Cloud Data Management Interface (CDMI)

The Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) is a not-for-profit association consisting of members from hundreds of companies that share the goal of standardizing data-storage solutions. SNIA is working on the Cloud Data Management Interface (CDMI), which defines the behind-the-scenes functional interface that applications will use to create, retrieve, update, and delete cloud-based data items.

A goal of CDMI is that cloud-based storage facilities be discoverable to applications. This means that applications can query the facility for the data services it provides. In addition, CDMI is setting the stage for metadata assignment to data items that will be key to the development of Web 3.0 semantic capabilities. FIGURE 6-15 illustrates the SNIA CDMI website.

Search, Login, and Join S N I A are the buttons at top right. About, Standards, Education, Technology Focus Areas, News and Events, Resources, and Membership are the menus at the top in which Technology Focus Areas is selected. In the left pane, under Cloud Storage Technologies, Technical Work is selected. The content pane on the right reads as follows: CDMI Cloud Storage Standard. The Cloud Data Management Interface (C D M I) defines the functional interface that applications will use to create, retrieve, update and delete data elements from the Cloud. C D M I Features and Benefits: Bullet point: C D M I adds powerful data management capabilities that include administration and management of user accounts, security access, monitoring and billing information, and even provides management of storage that is accessible by other protocols. Bullet point: C D M I clients can discover the capabilities of the cloud storage offering and use this information to tailor the management of containers and the data placed in them. Bullet point: C D M I is an open international (I S O) standard designed to work alongside OpenStack Swift and Amazon S 3 Models. Bullet point: As part of this interface the client will be able to discover the capabilities of the cloud storage offering and use this interface to manage containers and the data that is placed in them. In addition, metadata can be set on containers and their contained data elements through this interface.
