Chris Lennon is President and CEO of MediAnswers, a trusted advisor to the cream of the crop of media companies worldwide. He has over 30 years of experience in the media business, leading large projects on every continent except for Antarctica. He has held a variety of leadership positions in the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE), including Standards Director, Local Section Manager, Technology Committee Chair, and others. He is an SMPTE Fellow and recipient of SMPTE’s 2008 Citation. He is known as a thought leader, with a reputation built on not only working with the world’s leading media organizations, but his leadership of several leading-edge industry efforts in many diverse areas, like BXF, NABA/DPP Content Delivery Specs, PMCP, 3DTV, OBID Audience Measurement, Multilink SDI using CWDM, microservices in media, and many more.

He also serves as Executive Director of the Open Services Alliance, a global industry organization focused on interoperability among microservice-oriented media systems.

In his spare time, he is a championship winning race car driver, author, and high-performance driving coach, and runs Winding Road Adventures.

Clyde Smith is a Retired Former Senior Vice President, Advanced Technology for FOX Network Engineering and Operations, where he supported Broadcast and Cable Networks operating groups in addressing their challenges with technologies, standards, and regulations.

Previously, he was SVP of Global Broadcast Technology and Standards for Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. In this capacity, Smith was responsible for the strategic development and planning of new technology in addition to the operational transition of media from production to broadcast to air. Smith’s broad knowledge of operational and technical systems and hands-on experience developing processes for integrating operational facilities from the ground up were vital to the Turner Entertainment Group’s continuing expansion.

Prior positions include SVP of Broadcast Engineering Research and Development at Turner and SVP & CTO at Speer Communications where he managed operations of one of the nation’s first all-digital facilities.

He worked for eight years in communications design and development engineering at the Kennedy Space Center, where he supported 48 shuttle missions, 3 interplanetary probes, and numerous Department of Defense initiatives.

Smith supported initiatives that were recognized by The Computer World Honors program with the 2005, Twenty-First Century Achievement Award and an Emmy Award for Pioneering Efforts in the Development of Automated, Server-Based Closed Captioning Systems.

Smith is a frequent speaker and honored guest at meetings for SMPTE, NAB, and SBE. He served 15 years as an SMPTE Governor; he also served as a Standards Chairman and Secretary/Treasurer of the SMPTE. He also was program chair for four SMPTE advance-imaging conferences. He has often presented and published research and technology papers that he has authored or co-authored in industry magazines and at industry conferences including CES, NAB, Hollywood Professional Alliance Tech Retreats, Storage Networking World, Storage Visions, VidTrans, IBC, SMPTE, SPIE, UFVA, and SBE.

He is an SMPTE Fellow and recipient of the SMPTE Progress Medal, SMPTE David Sarnoff Medal Award, and the SMPTE outstanding service award as well as The Broadcasting and Cable Technology Leadership award and the Storage Visions’ Storage Industry Service Award. He is a recipient of the North American Broadcasters Association International Achievement Award and an Honorary Member of the International Association of Broadcast Manufacturers (IABM).

Brian Campanotti is recognized as a successful entrepreneur, thought leader, published author and innovator in the area of large-scale unstructured data storage, archive and preservation. He is the founder of Cloudfirst.io, an innovative end-to-end technology and services provider focused on digital archive transformation and modernization, helping global content owners, producers and custodians develop and execute on their long-term strategies for massive-scale digital content archive, protection and preservation.

Prior to founding Cloudfirst.io, Mr. Campanotti was CTO at Front Porch Digital and instrumental in their emergence as the global leader in the digital archive space. During his tenure, he helped guide the company through several successful transactions including its acquisition by Oracle in 2014. Prior to that, he founded Masstech, another leading provider of digital archive solutions, and began his career as a Project Engineer at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) in Toronto, Canada.

Mr. Campanotti and his team have won three Emmy® Awards for pivotal innovation in digital archive technologies, long-term digital preservation and large-scale digital video implementations. He was one of the primary inventors of the SMPTE and ISO/IEC Archive eXchange Format (AXF) Standard and holds a degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Toronto.

Arjun Ramamurthy was most recently the Senior Vice President of Technology at Twentieth Century Fox/Disney. In that capacity, he was responsible for setting technology direction for Motion Picture and TV Production, Post-production Digital Content Processing, and downstream distribution and Digital Archiving. In addition, he was responsible for outlining and defining the next generation workflow as well as introduction of new technology and toolsets into the production.

He has over 25 years of experience in the industry, and was previously with Deluxe’s EFILM facility, and prior to that, with Warner Bros. Technical Operations and Feature Animation. He is an active member of SMPTE and IEEE, and has contributed on a variety of technical committees and standards. He holds several patents in the area of Digital Image processing and Media Post Production.

He is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and a fellow of Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers.

Glenn Reitmeier is widely recognized as a technology visionary and pioneer in the television industry. Throughout his career, he has been a leader in establishing revolutionary new digital standards, including the SMPTE Component Digital Video and SDI standards, the Grand Alliance digital HDTV system that became ATSC 1.0, and the new ATSC 3.0 standard. Now an independent consultant, Reitmeier recently retired from 17 years at NBC Universal as SVP, Technology Standards and Policy, where he contributed to industry technical standards and to the technical aspects of the company’s government policy positions and commercial agreements. Previously, he spent 25 years in digital video research at RCA/Sarnoff Laboratories. He has served the industry as a Board member of ATSC, NABA, and OATC and has been Chairman of both ATSC and OATC. He is an SMPTE Fellow and a recipient of the Progress Medal and the Signal Processing Medal. He is also an inaugural member of the CTA’s Academy of Digital Television Pioneers and a recipient of the NAB Television Engineering Award. He holds over 60 patents and is recognized in the New Jersey Inventors Hall of Fame.

Jay Veloso Batista is a published author and editor. Batista is the Chief Revenue Officer for a SaaS platform supplying innovative technology to the Galleries and Museums Industry. Over the past 30+ years, Batista has held executive positions in media vendor companies including traffic software, rights software, encode/transcode tools, and complete satellite and broadcast transmission systems.

CONTRIBUTING AUTHORS

François Abbe has spent 20+ years in professional video, starting in England as an R&D engineer, then product marketing manager in technology for TV. In 2005, he became an architect and independent consultant, then launched the start-up MESCLADO where he combined innovation, strategy, and HR. His references include media (Canal+, Orange, France Télévisions, ARTE, RTBF), service providers, and sports federations. Thanks to this experience, Abbe now offers an efficient and innovative approach to help executives strengthen and differentiate their communication.

Bryce Alden has spent nearly 15 years in the media entertainment industry focusing on Digital Cinema mastering and distribution. At Deluxe Entertainment Service, he has helped evolve the company from its historic film focus to a highly diversified post-production digital service provider. In his time with Deluxe, Alden has designed and built out digital cinema mastering systems, projection systems and screening rooms, hard-drive duplication systems, and associated workflows. As Vice President of Digital Cinema and Security, he now oversees the operations of Deluxe and DCDC’s satellite distribution networks, a system for which he was a key designer. He holds a BS in physics from the University of Southern California.

Wendy Aylsworth (an SMPTE Fellow and past president) has spent over 30 years in entertainment technology, bringing emerging technologies into production and distribution usage, and continues to provide technical consulting and strategic board guidance. She was a key leader in the transition and standardization of digital cinema that has become the mainstay of the industry. She led the digital transitions of the entire animation processes at Disney and Warner Bros., as seen in such hits as Lion King and Space Jam, and new technologies such as high frame rate, as seen in the Hobbit trilogy. Aylsworth is involved in many industry organizations to share knowledge and grow the next generation of entertainment professionals. In recognition of her work, Aylsworth has been honored with many awards, including the Charles F. Jenkins Lifetime Achievement Emmy Award from the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences and the Bob Lambert Technology Leadership Award from the Entertainment Technology Center at the University of Southern California, and is a Lifetime Fellow of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers. Aylsworth holds a BSCE from the University of Michigan and an MS/MBA (Beta Gamma Sigma) from USC.

Annie Chang is the Vice President, Creative Technologies for Universal Pictures, responsible for developing strategies and designing innovative next-generation workflows across film and emerging immersive media experiences. Prior to joining Universal Pictures, Chang was the VP, Technology for Marvel Studios, and held various roles during more than a decade tenure at The Walt Disney Studios. Chang is the AMPAS ACES Project Chair and has been a Co-Chair of the 10E Essence Technology and Chair of the Interoperable Master Format (IMF) Working Group at SMPTE. She is an SMPTE Fellow and is a recipient of the SMPTE Workflow Systems Medal Award, Advanced Imaging Society’s Distinguished Leadership award, and StudioDaily’s 2018 Exceptional Women in Production and Post. In 2020, The Hollywood Reporter named Chang on their list of top “Hollywood Innovators.”

Julián Fernández-Campón has been working in computer-related companies since 1997 when he started with Telecommunication giant Alcatel as software developer. In 2000 he moved to the university research group that would become Tedial, where he was involved with software development and system analysis for the first versions of Tedial products.

From 2004 onwards Fernández-Campón moved into project management. Since then, he has been working in system dimensioning, workflows definition, and broadcast consultancy, and has been involved in most of Tedial’s broadcast projects worldwide. He is now Chief Technology Officer at Tedial leading the transition over the last years to meet the new Challenges in the market with the adoption of the latest technologies in the Tedial Products, Solutions, and Services and the enterprise transformation to DevOps.

He has a degree in Computer Science Engineering at the Higher Technical School of Computer Engineering, University of Málaga, specializing in Telecommunications and Robotics.

Frans de Jong holds a Master’s degree in Information Theory from Delft Technical University. He started his career in broadcasting as a radio engineer and subsequently worked as a video editor and systems architect for several broadcasting organizations. In 2003 Frans joined the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) in Geneva (Switzerland). He is a Senior Engineer at the Technology & Innovation Department, where he coordinates project groups on production technology topics, such as (U)HDTV, Loudness, Subtitling, Quality Control, and Cloud Production.

Brendan Kehoe is the President of Effective Media Services, an Entertainment Software and Consulting Company specializing in On Air Promotion. Mr. Kehoe has held senior management roles at Fox, Warner Bros., and CBS spanning a 40-year career in Entertainment.

Al Kovalick has specialized in professional networked media and infrastructure for the past 25 years. He started his career at Hewlett-Packard, where he became the principal architect of HP’s first Video-on-Demand server. Following HP in 1999, he became the CTO at Pinnacle Systems. In 2004 Kovalick moved to Avid Technology as a Corporate Fellow. In 2012, he founded Media Systems Consulting in Silicon Valley where his clients include the most respected broadcasters and media vendors in the Americas, Asia, and Europe.

He is an active speaker and educator and has presented more than 50 papers at industry conferences. He has authored 21 peer-reviewed articles in the SMPTE Motion Imaging Journal and holds 13 U.S. patents. Al wrote the first book of its kind, Video Systems in an IT Environment: The Basics of Professional Networked Media and File-based Workflows (2009, 2nd ed.). He has a BSEE degree from San Jose State University and an MSEE degree from the University of California at Berkeley. He is an SMPTE Life Fellow and a recipient of the SMPTE David Sarnoff Medal. Shawn Maynard is the Senior Vice President and General Manager of Florical Systems. Prior to Florical He was the Director of Operations for NBC Universal Local Media Group managing the SouthEast Hub. He also serves on IABM’s Americas Council and Secretary/Treasurer of SMPTE’s Florida Chapter.

Stan Moote is the CTO for IABM, the international trade association for suppliers of broadcast and media technology.

He began his television career in 1977 interning as a plant engineer for CFTO-TV in Toronto, Canada, during the co-op component of his engineering degree from University of Waterloo.

In 1980, Mr. Moote co-founded Digi-tel and was responsible for the design and development of various innovative digital video products, before bringing his many talents to Leitch in 1984. Mr. Moote was involved in the SMPTE Digital Video Standards Committee meetings, creating CCIR-601, and continued his standardization work on video transport by being on the VSF board of directors, 2001 to 2004. He is an active member of the NATAS Technical EMMY Committee.

With his continued involvement with SMPTE, in 2015 he received the prestigious SMPTE Digital Processing Medal Award.

While holding Vice President and CTO positions at Leitch and Harris, Mr. Moote focused on workflow solutions, new technology, standardization, and interoperability on a global basis. He developed several patents including scrambling systems, data monitoring, multi-viewer, router processors, and IPTV systems.

Mr. Moote is an accomplished presenter and journalist. He regularly presents at IBC, NAB, Broadcast Asia, and BIRTV, and is much sought-after for keynotes, panels, and to arrange/moderate various conference sessions. This is all due to his clear understanding of new technology trends, how they interact, and seeing practical applications that both engineers and business managers value worldwide. Andy Quested started as a BBC Technical Assistant in 1978 becoming a video-tape editor in 1985 where he worked on many comedy and children’s and documentary series. In 1998 Andy moved to a new technology department working on the BBC’s first HD programs including Planet Earth I and the first UHD program, Planet Earth II.

He is technical lead of the UK’s Digital Production Partnerships AS-11 format and leads the EBU Production Strategic Group looking at all areas of content production. He is an active member of SMPTE becoming a Fellow in 2014 for work relating to standards.

Quested is currently the chair of ITU-R Working Party 6C, where he initiated new areas of study on Advanced Immersive Audio-Visual Systems and Artificial Intelligence in content production and international program exchange.

Karyn Reid is VP, Broadcast Systems at Fox Corp. Reid has been a Product Manager at broadcast traffic/automation, and program management software vendors and has been involved in the SMPTE BXF schema committee since its inception.

Jeff Stansfield is the President and CEO of Advantage Video Systems, a leading technology provider to the broadcast, motion picture, television, and motion graphics industries. He has served as a general board member, treasurer, and secretary of SMPTE (Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers). He supports many other industry organizations including the Creative Pro User Group Network, the Digital Cinema Society, the Hollywood Post Alliance, the Society of Television Engineers, and the National Association of Broadcasters. His more than 34 years of experience includes the construction of broadcast facilities as well as technology services for production and postproduction facilities, special effects businesses, and motion graphics businesses.
