The following charts describe some of the major developments in global air transport markets over the past 40 years. They show an industry facing rapid growth in demand from travellers and shippers, but also vulnerability to extreme volatility and high fuel costs. Over this period it has not been possible for the industry to sustain more than minimal profits.
