Now that you have seen how to apply XP, here is how I see some of the ideas from other domains that connect to XP. Some of the ideas influenced XP directly; others just provide clear parallels between XP and other disciplines.

People who understand one of these other ideas, quickly grasp XP and see how the parts fit together. I spoke about XP to a group that included a very skeptical chief financial officer. In the afternoon, though, I saw a light go on for him. “This is just lean manufacturing as applied to software! I went through the shift to lean manufacturing at my last job. Now what you're saying makes sense.”

Parallels with other disciplines have to be applied with care. What works on the manufacturing floor may not work in the programming room and vice versa. However, other disciplines have been working on difficult people problems, like encouraging organizational change, for decades. Understanding the lessons they have learned can help accelerate application of XP.
