Cover Letters

This appendix contains two samples that illustrate the type of information that should be included in a cover letter, as referenced in chapter 8.

•  The first sample is a standard cover letter that highlights key selling points for the position, as well as why the applicant is interested in the job.

•  The second sample letter is in a “T” format, which identifies key job requirements in one column and applicant qualifications in the other. This format works well for applicants who need to clearly show how their background fits the stated job requirements.

While there is some debate about the value of cover letters, in our experience, having a cover letter can definitely help you, while not having one can hurt you. So, we recommend taking the time to create a solid master cover letter that includes all your potential selling points, which can be easily tailored to specific positions.
