A lifeline in sequence diagram is an entity or element of a system. Every lifeline has its own logic and tasks to do. Normally, a system has multiple lifelines, and commands are passed from one lifeline to another.

A lifeline is denoted by a box with a vertical line issuing from the bottom, as shown in the following diagram:
