ented measures that can better integrate IR system evaluation with the measurements of user char-
acteristics, behavior, and interaction experience. Designing useful user-centered evaluation metrics
can help support both search behavior studies (e.g., determine which part(s) of search behavior is
closely associated with search experience) and search systems evaluation.
2.5 SUMMARY
is chapter introduces the three major streams of research in the area of IIR and illustrates their
respective main focuses and topics with recently published IR studies. While the examples of
research works presented above cannot exhaust all specic subareas and relevant topics under the
three lines of studies, they jointly reveal the diversity of IIR user studies in terms of research prob-
lems, methods, topics of interest. Although this growing diversity certainly fosters the vitality of
IIR research, it also leads to a series of challenges and obstacles in terms of developing standard IIR
practices and unied evaluation framework for user studies. In the following chapters, we will ex-
plain how we developed the faceted evaluation framework and how this framework can be applied
to partially address the challenges and problems in characterizing and evaluating IIR user studies.
