Tile

Tile is a small square-shaped piece of hardware that you can attach to your valuables (wallet, keys, smartphone, car, and so on) to mitigate the risk of losing them:

A Tile can be attached to an item that the user has a risk of losing, and in case the user loses that item then he/she can locate it with the help of the Tile smartphone app.

The Tile smartphone app uses Bluetooth Low Energy to locate lost Tiles up to a 150-foot range. Tiles have in-built buzzers, which beep audibly so that the user can locate the source of sound and hence the item.

Each user's Tiles are mapped to his/her account. Tile also supports something known as Community Find. Community Find is a facility that can help you locate an item beyond the traditional 150-foot BLE range limit. The way Community Find works is as follows: when the Tile app runs, it is just not looking for your Tile, it is keeping a track of everyone's Tile (no matter whether it belongs to you or not). However, the user of the Tile app is deliberately kept oblivious to this fact due to reasons related to individual privacy. If any user loses his/her Tile beyond the 150-foot radius and needs to find it, then he/she can activate the Notify When Found feature in the Tile app. Now, if the lost Tile comes within the range of another user's Tile app, then the nearby user's application will send an anonymous update of that item's location to the item's owner.

Tile makes an excellent case study since it demonstrates how Bluetooth Low Energy is making its way into the consumer utility items domain.
