From the Ford Foundation (https://www.fordfoundation.org/about/people/diversity-equity-and-inclusion/):

  • Diversity: Diversity is the representation of all our varied identities and differences (race, ethnicity, gender, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, tribe, caste, socioeconomic status, thinking and communication styles, etc.), collectively and as individuals.
  • Equity: Equity seeks to ensure fair treatment, equality of opportunity, and fairness in access to information and resources for all.
  • Inclusion: Inclusion builds a culture of belonging by actively inviting the contribution and participation of all people.

From the University of Michigan (https://diversity.umich.edu/about/defining-dei/):

  • Equity means that everyone gets to contribute to the playlist.
  • Inclusion means that everyone has the opportunity to dance.

(Two-spirit refers to a person who identifies as having both a masculine and a feminine spirit and is used by some Indigenous people to describe their sexual, gender, and/or spiritual identity.)

POC: People of color.

Structural Racism:

From the Aspen Institute (https://www.aspeninstitute.org/blog-posts/structural-racism-definition/):

  • Structural racism is a system in which public policies, institutional practices, cultural representations, and other norms work in various, often reinforcing ways to perpetuate racial group inequity. It identifies dimensions of our history and culture that have allowed privileges associated with “whiteness” and disadvantages associated with “color” to endure and adapt over time. Structural racism is not something that a few people or institutions choose to practice. Instead it has been a feature of the social, economic, and political systems in which we all exist.

From the Catalyst website (https://www.catalyst.org/research/structural-racism-black-americans/):

  • Structural racism is a long history of discriminatory and dehumanizing laws and policies that have created and exacerbated inequality in almost every sphere of life. These laws and policies are built into the fundamental structures of our societies—our systems of labor, housing, education, voting, healthcare, and justice. An overarching system of racial bias across institutions and society that gives privileges to White people resulting in disadvantages to people of color.

Systemic Racism:

From the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) (https://www.eeoc.gov/advancing-opportunity-review-systemic-program-us-equal-employment-opportunity-commission):

  • Examples of systemic practices include: discriminatory barriers in recruitment and hiring; discriminatorily restricted access to management trainee programs and to high-level jobs; exclusion of qualified women from traditionally male-dominated fields of work; disability discrimination such as unlawful pre-employment inquiries; age discrimination in reductions in force and retirement benefits; compliance with customer preferences that result in discriminatory placement or assignments.

White Privilege:

From Merriam-Webster (https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/white%20privilege):

  • The set of social and economic advantages that White people have by virtue of their race in a culture characterized by racial inequality.
