Summary

Maintenance is evolving a system that is already seeing the benefit of being used. By using patterns and applying reorganization of code through refactoring, it is possible to continue to keep a system from becoming overly complex through maintenance and, in fact, continually to improve the ability to extend the system. This eliminates the view of maintenance as the dreaded nightmare of software, causing us to understand that it is part of the normal product life cycle and evolution.
