PART 5

CONVERSATIONS TO TAKE ACTION

The purpose of building relationships, developing others, and making decisions is to set the stage for effective action, because at the end of the day, only action produces results. The management mindset of executing the plan, using resources efficiently, and focusing on results takes center stage when action begins—the priority being to get things done. But the leadership mindset of doing the right things, acquiring resources, and focusing on people is still vital in order to respond to changing circumstances and keep the vision of the future clear in everyone’s eyes.

Some executives use ridicule and threats to motivate action, which leaves their people reluctant to take risks. Great leaders inspire teamwork by showing their people a better future and how they can be part of it. As a result, people enjoy what they do, work diligently to achieve goals they believe in, and know they will share in the rewards. As the leader, you must ensure that everyone supports the plan, understands her role, and knows what is expected of her. You also must determine what motivates each of your high potentials to do his best. Some are motivated by encouragement, some respond to enticements, some are driven by competition, and others need more direct motivation.

Part 5 discusses several aspects of leading action, starting with a smooth transition from talking to action (Chapter 20). However, if you take action before planning, you are likely to deploy people and resources inefficiently and produce inferior results (Chapter 21). One of the most challenging actions you can undertake is to initiate a strategic change (Chapter 22). Effective leaders hold conversations to evaluate both successful and unsuccessful actions in ways that improve current results and lay the foundation for future actions (Chapter 23). Part 5 closes by discussing techniques you can use to motivate and inspire people in turbulent times (Chapter 24). Each chapter makes key distinctions between leadership and management mindsets in terms of how they empower and direct people to take effective action.
