Your mind has enormous capacity for absorbing information. You can train yourself to recall long lists of phone numbers, do difficult calculations, learn a foreign language, or play a musical instrument.
When a thought enters your conscious mind, it is transferred to your subconscious mind for “filing”. Your conscious mind constantly draws on your subconscious mind for all the decisions you make. Most of the time you run on autopilot, doing complex things without even thinking about them. For example, you can drive for long periods through complex road systems, yet find it hard to remember which route you took. Because you have mastered the skill of driving, you do it with little conscious thought. You can learn to harness the power of your unconscious mind by mastering the skills you need in life.
Just as a spider can build a web effortlessly, humans have amazing abilities to perform complex tasks without even thinking about it.
Your brain works like a switchboard operator, taking in information, making judgments based on what you believe to be true, and then making decisions. Of the many theories in neuroscience, that of brain dominance is the most common. The brain has two hemispheres, left and right.
The left side is more analytical and is responsible for the hard facts, such as mathematics, logic, discipline, structure, time sequences, abstractions, and deductive reasoning. People with a left brain preference will tend to learn step-by-step, starting with the details and going on to the bigger picture.
The right side is considered to be responsible for the softer aspects, such as emotions, feelings, intuition, spontaneity, risk-taking, first impressions, sensitivity, day-dreaming, and visualizing. People with a right brain preference usually start with the overview of a skill and then get into the specifics.
