Image Following and unfollowing channels

LinkedIn Pulse displays relevant professional news and insights directly on your home page. You can customize its content so that you view only information about your profession, industry, and interests rather than the general news you view on other sites. In addition, LinkedIn enables you to follow high-level industry leaders, called influencers, as well as specific channels related to your interests.

Viewing and Customizing News

LinkedIn displays four articles in the LinkedIn Pulse section at the top of your home page: a main feature with a large image and three additional articles. This content is recommended for you based on the influencers and channels you follow. If you aren’t following any sources, LinkedIn offers news targeted to the industry you specified when you signed up for an account.

It’s Not All Good: Can I Remove LinkedIn Pulse?

Although many people enjoy reading customized news when they log in to LinkedIn, others aren’t so eager to do so. Unfortunately, you can’t remove LinkedIn Pulse from your home page. You can, however, customize its content. In this chapter, you discover how to make LinkedIn Pulse more relevant to you.

View LinkedIn Pulse Content

On LinkedIn Pulse, you can view both influencer posts and news from leading news sources such as The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, TechCrunch, Inc., Fox Business, and more.

1. If you aren’t already on your home page, click the Home link.

2. Preview the current news on LinkedIn Pulse.

3. Click a title to open the article.

What Happens Next?

If you click a link that leads to an article on an external website, LinkedIn opens the article in another browser window. If you click a link that leads to an influencer post, LinkedIn opens the post within LinkedIn, where you can comment on and share it.

How Do I Comment on a News Article?

If you want to comment on a news article within LinkedIn rather than just go to the original article, you need to do so from the LinkedIn Pulse page. See the next section, “View More News.”

View More News

To view more news as well as comment, share, and like news articles, you need to go to the LinkedIn Pulse page.

1. On the LinkedIn home page, click the LinkedIn Pulse link.

Image

2. The Your News tab displays.

3. Click a title to open an article.

4. Click the Like icon to like this article.

5. Click the Comment icon to add a comment.

6. Click the Share icon to share with other LinkedIn members.

It’s Not All Good: Your LinkedIn Pulse Activity Is Public

Remember that commenting on or liking content on LinkedIn Pulse is a public action. Others can see your activities, and LinkedIn might display your photo. Before making a comment on or liking a controversial topic, consider whether you want your LinkedIn network to see this action.

Customize Your News

LinkedIn enables you to customize what displays in the LinkedIn Pulse section on your home page.

1. On the LinkedIn home page, pause over the All Updates drop-down list.

2. Specify the updates you want to see.

LinkedIn Pulse Mobile App

Optionally, you can also install the Pulse Mobile app if you want to read news on the go. See Chapter 8, “Using LinkedIn Tools,” for more information on the Pulse app.

Customize LinkedIn Pulse Email Alerts

By default, LinkedIn sends you a weekly email update with the latest from LinkedIn Pulse. If you want to change your delivery frequency—or opt out of email updates entirely—you can do so on the Account & Settings page. See Chapter 4, “Customizing Your LinkedIn Settings,” to learn about additional email customization options.

1. Pause your mouse over your photo.

2. Click the Review link for Privacy & Settings.

Image

3. Click the Communications tab.

4. Click the Set the Frequency of Emails link.

Image

5. Click the Edit icon next to Updates and News.

Image

6. Specify your preferred email frequency for LinkedIn Pulse updates: Daily Digest Email, When Influencers You’re Following Post, Weekly Digest Email, or No Email.

7. Click the Save Changes button.

Exploring Influencers

Influencers are well-known industry leaders whom LinkedIn has invited to contribute original content to LinkedIn Pulse. Popular influencers include Virgin Group founder Richard Branson (who currently has the most followers by far), President Barack Obama, Bill Gates, UK Prime Minister David Cameron, Deepak Chopra, and many more.

Follow an Influencer

When you follow an influencer, this person’s posts display in the LinkedIn Pulse section of your home page and on the Influencer Posts tab. The All Influencers tab provides a wide selection of interesting people to follow. LinkedIn identifies the influencers you currently follow with a check mark and those you don’t follow with a plus sign.

Image

1. On your home page, click the LinkedIn Pulse link.

Another Way to Find Influencers

Alternatively, select Pulse from the Interests menu and click the All Influencers tab to find influencers to follow.

Image

2. Select the All Influencers tab.

3. Click the plus sign (+) on the image of an influencer to start following.

View an Influencer’s Content

You can view all of an influencer’s content on a single page. This is also a good way to preview what an influencer has to say before deciding whether or not to follow this person.

Image

1. On the All Influencers tab, click the image (not the plus sign or check mark) of the influencer whose page you want to view.

Image

2. LinkedIn displays this person’s page.

3. Click a post to open it.

Image

4. LinkedIn displays the post.

View Influencer Posts

LinkedIn displays selected influencer posts in the LinkedIn Pulse section on your home page, but you can also view all these posts in one place on the Influencer Posts tab on your LinkedIn Pulse page.

Image

Unfollow an Influencer

If you no longer want to follow an influencer, you can unfollow that person with a single click. To do so, go to the All Influencers tab and click the check mark on the image of the influencer you want to unfollow. After you unfollow someone, this person’s posts no longer display in your LinkedIn Pulse content.

Image

Exploring Channels

Channels are broad topics of interest to many LinkedIn members. They include content from relevant influencers as well as selected third-party news articles. Sample channels include Technology, Entrepreneurship & Small Business, Green Business, Healthcare, Marketing Strategies, Professional Women, Social Media, Higher Education, and more. LinkedIn displays content from the channels you follow in the LinkedIn Pulse section on your home page.

Follow a Channel

LinkedIn identifies the channels you currently follow with a check mark and those you don’t follow with a plus sign.

1. On your home page, click the LinkedIn Pulse link.

Image

2. Select the All Channels tab.

3. Click the plus sign (+) on the channel you want to follow.

Image

Unfollow a Channel

If you no longer want to follow a channel, you can unfollow it with a single click. To do so, navigate to the All Channels tab and click the check mark on the channel you want to unfollow. After you unfollow a channel, its posts no longer display in your LinkedIn Pulse content.

Follow Publishers on LinkedIn

You can also follow select publishers on LinkedIn, including The Wall Street Journal, Time Magazine, CNBC, USA TODAY, Forbes, and more. To view available publishers, click the All Publishers tab on the Pulse page.
