Preface

I have always lived my life with eyes open in wonderment. I count myself blessed to have the inquisitive nature of a child. The world is full of wonderful new discoveries if we just open our eyes, hearts and minds to this vast universe that we are privileged to journey for a period. I love learning. I love research. I love discovering. Wish that all humanity could go on this quest for discovery and leave the wars, anger, clandestine politics and distrust behind and give their lives to making a positive difference for mankind, rather than destruction.

I look at nanotechnology as the means some will take to pursue miraculous discoveries that can enhance our lives, heal our cancers, grow the food, destroy harmful viruses and bacteria, freshen our water, eradicate our disease, plump our wrinkles, and in general, help us to live in a new world via the powers of the electron microscope In effect, it is a chance to view through a new lens, the life we are privy to in this 21st century. No time has ever been so exciting, moved so quickly, nor has any other time embodied the world in the same way as nanotechnology has the power to do It is time to take off our blinders, shed our fears and step into the power of this gift we have been given. It is time to harness and standardize the growth to protect us all. It is time to "go boldly where no man has gone before..."

What we do with this gift that is before us falls back in the lap of humanity.

As you will see in the following pages of this book, the wonderment known as nanotechnology has the capability to touch virtually every aspect of our lives New discoveries have touched our lives in products that we have been unaware we were using The secrets of nanotechnology genius were leaked to the world over the past few years by modern-day horror writers, who challenged us to be wary of the power that can be unleashed. Brilliant writers have researched the science through the common man’s eyes and shared how zealots can potentially abuse it Noted scientists have published papers on the wonders, and yes, the dangers, as they spend their lives poring over the microscopes watching miracles unfold before their eyes. Governments have synthesized the data and realize the economic potential that could come from being a leader in the realm Investors, venture capitalists, and financiers are becoming interested in the return on investment (ROI) that could create wealth of vast proportions The military has given it over to major universities to come up with new ways to protect our men and women fighting abroad, as well as to make weapons of war.Educational systems are beginning to offer primary classes and terminal degrees Businesses are taking notice and starting to question their involvement And surprisingly, a large part of the world has never heard of it.

I wrote this book because the time has come. For the most part, the miracles of nanomaterial technologies still lie in the catacombs of the great universities awaiting commercial birth; a way to propel it through the "valley of death" that many technological discoveries must traverse seeking fruition. I have strived to create a nanotechnology commercialization model that will enhance the partnership among universities, venture capitalists and business to eliminate this commercialization gap, thereby providing a structure for industry opportunity and growth of technology applications.

There is great work to be done. It is time to focus—to put forth our efforts to channel the development of this amazing technology via legitimate business channels, standardizing the development throughout the world, so that it can emerge as a safe, useful technology that limits the hazards of shoddy development This delicate technology must not be suppressed out of fear only to land in the hands of zealots with unsavory power ideals; rather it should be unleashed to mankind through commercialism and the businesses community in applications that will benefit the world. We must create legitimate structures for growth and business opportunities, rather than to leave this power to a few. By bringing it to the commercialism and business realm via standardization, individuals can be a part of it, making it a technology that can be used by the masses to create jobs, stimulate the world economy and better mankind.

As a doctor of industrial/organizational psychology, I look upon not only this wondrous science for the miracle that it is, but also to how it fits the scheme of survival in our world. As an I/O psychologist, I study the workplace, applying psychological principles to issues of critical relevance to the business community—in this case organizational development with regard to a new technology breakthrough that could usher in the next industrial age, thereby stimulating our workforce and economy.

This book was designed for students, investors, scientists, politicians, universities and the everyday individual to open a dialogue about our future It is a clarion call—an urgent call to action to move the technology from the laboratories to the business world, rather than suppress the genius of our scientists. So many great discoveries have died in laboratories, or were sacrificed for unnatural gains. I am enthralled by Einstein. I would love to have a discourse with him today on how his ideas could have been used to further humanity and our planet, and not be used as political power by rogue governments.

This book will take you through the journey of nanotechnology to commercialization, looking at the various industries it affects, ease of entry options, intellectual property concerns, emerging ethics, its dangers, standardization needs, investor resources, government support, various business applications, supporting organizations, and equally important, the social ramifications.
