Chapter 4. Web Application Design

Chapter Objectives

After this chapter, you will know:

Before building an application, a Web developer must have a clear map of the system being built. There are proven strategies and methodologies for designing applications and designing Web pages. No code should be written until these steps are taken.

There is no right answer when it comes to how an application should look and how its screens should be designed. What everyone can agree on, however, is that design is a necessary step before building an application, and there are tools and methodologies that help make design easier and more effective. Moreover, everyone should also agree that the application should be straightforward and easy for the user to understand and use.

The steps outlined in this chapter must be undertaken before you start coding. If a design team provides you with a prototype, storyboard, and detailed design document, you have the information you need to start building the application, and you are well on your way. If the application has not been clearly outlined, however, or if you find yourself acting in the role of both designer and developer, then take the steps outlined in this chapter to be sure your project does not derail.
