The U.S. Copyright Office

The U.S. Copyright Office is a department of the Library of Congress, the world's largest library, and is located at 101 Independence Avenue SE, Washington, DC 20559-6000. The Copyright Office administers copyright law and handles the process of copyright registration. The Copyright Office generally registers about 600,000 copyrights each year; it is implementing a system by which applications and other copyright-related documents can be submitted electronically.

The Copyright Office offers a variety of useful publications and forms. These materials can be obtained by writing to the office (Publications Section, LM-455, Copyright Office, Library of Congress, Washington, DC 20559-6000), ordering through a forms hotline (202-707-9100), ordering through a fax-on-demand service (202-707-2600), or downloading the publications and forms from the Internet. The Copyright Public Information Office provides information specialists to answer questions by phone (202-707-3000).
