ABOUT THE AUTHORS

Jack J. Phillips, PhD, chairman of ROI Institute, is a world-renowned expert on accountability, measurement, and evaluation. Former bank president, Phillips provides consulting services for Fortune 500 companies and major global organizations. The author or editor of more than 75 books, he conducts workshops and presents at conferences throughout the world.

Phillips has received several awards for his books and work. On three occasions, Meeting News named him one of the 25 Most Powerful People in the Meetings and Events Industry based on his work on ROI. In 2017, Jack received the Brand Personality Award from Asia Pacific Brand Foundation for his work as an international consultant, author, teacher, and speaker. The Society for Human Resource Management presented him an award for one of his books and honored a Phillips ROI study with its highest award for creativity. The American Society for Training and Development gave him its highest award, Distinguished Contribution to Workplace Learning and Development for his work on ROI. Jack and his wife, Patti Phillips, were the first recipients of the Center for Talent Reporting’s Distinguished Contributor Award. This award recognized their outstanding and significant contributions in the measurement and management of human capital. In November 2019, Jack and Patti were named two of the top 50 coaches in the world, by the Thinkers 50 organization. In addition, they were named finalists for the Marshall Goldsmith Distinguished Achievement Award for Coaching. Jack’s work has been featured in the Wall Street Journal, BusinessWeek, and Fortune magazine. He has been interviewed by several television programs, including CNN.

Dr. Phillips’ expertise in measurement and evaluation is based on more than 27 years of corporate experience in the aerospace, textile, metals, construction materials, and banking industries. Dr. Phillips has served as training and development manager at two Fortune 500 firms, as senior human resource officer at two firms, as president of a regional bank, and as management professor at a major state university.

Dr. Phillips regularly consults with clients in manufacturing, service, and government organizations in over 70 countries in North and South America, Europe, Middle East, Africa, Australia, and Asia.

Dr. Phillips has undergraduate degrees in electrical engineering, physics, and mathematics; a master’s degree in Decision Sciences from Georgia State University; and a PhD in Human Resource Management from the University of Alabama. He has served on the boards of several private businesses and nonprofits and associations, including the American Society for Training and Development, the National Management Association, and the International Society for Performance Improvement, where he served as president (2012–2013).

Frank Q. Fu, PhD, CPT, is an Associate Professor of Marketing at the University of Missouri–St. Louis. He obtained his PhD in marketing from the University of Houston. He also holds an MBA in marketing from the University of Rochester. He brings a diversity of methodological approaches, including quantitative modeling and behaviorally oriented survey research, to questions regarding the sales-marketing interface for new product success. His current research interests focus on marketing performance improvement and sales performance improvement. He won the 2006 AMA Sales SIG Award for best doctoral dissertation in professional selling and sales management. In 2005, he was selected as one of the four winners to receive an AMA Sales SIG/DSEF Sales Dissertation Research Grant.

Dr. Fu has published articles in the Journal of Marketing, Marketing Letters, Journal of Marketing Theory and Practice, Journal of Personal Selling and Sales Management, Journal of Strategic Marketing, Human Performance, and Performance Improvement, among others. He has also presented research papers at various national and international conferences. Currently, he serves as an associate editor of Performance Improvement Quarterly and as an editorial review board member for the Journal of Marketing Theory and Practice.

Prior to joining academia, he gained valuable sales, marketing, and management experience in the pharmaceutical and medical equipment industries. For five years, he worked as sales representative, commercial supervisor, and district sales manager for a Johnson & Johnson Company in China. As sales manager, he worked on several new product launches and was responsible for a $12 million sales budget. In 2006, he was inducted into the Beta Gamma Sigma Honor Society for collegiate schools of business. He joined the Alpha Mu Alpha National Marketing Honorary Society as a faculty member in 2012.

In addition to doing academic research and teaching, Dr. Fu helps American and Chinese companies improve their marketing performance through consulting and advising efforts.

Patti P. Phillips, PhD, CPT, is CEO of ROI Institute and a leader in measurement and evaluation. Since 1997, Patti has been a driving force in the global adoption of the ROI Methodology. Her work as an educator, researcher, consultant, and coach spans private sector, public sector, nonprofit, and nongovernmental organizations in over 70 countries.

Patti serves as a member of the Board of Trustees of the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR). She serves as chair of the Institute for Corporate Productivity (i4cp) People Analytics Board; Principal Research Fellow for The Conference Board; a board member of the International Federation for Training and Development Organizations (IFTDO); board chair for the Center for Talent Reporting (CTR); and is an Association for Talent Development (ATD) Certification Institute CPTD Fellow. Patti also serves on the faculty of the UN System Staff College in Turin, Italy. She is a Certified Performance Technologist (CPT) with the International Society of Performance Improvement (ISPI). Her work has been featured on CNBC, Euronews, and in more than a dozen business journals.

Hong Yi, CPT, serves as the President of Beijing Sinotrac Consulting Co. Ltd. She is a leading performance improvement consultant in China, a Certified Performance Technologist, and the President of the ISPI China Chapter. Ms. Yi is also a certified action learning facilitator, an adjunct professor at the University of International Business and Economics in Beijing, and a certified instructor registered at the PRC Ministry of Personnel.

With 25 years of experience in training and consulting, Ms. Yi has served clients including Chinese and multinational companies, such as IBM, Samsung, Johnson & Johnson, Novo Nordisk, Sinopec, China Unicom, China Telecom, and China Merchants Bank, among others.

Ms. Yi has published two books and multiple journal articles on performance improvement in China and completed more than 200 marketing performance improvement cases in a variety of industries.
