DEMONSTRATION
THE CHOSEN ONE

The Chosen One grew up on some backwater planet where breaking the soil was a rough way to make a living. She did it anyway, and the hard work, early mornings and calloused hands made an honest woman of her. She’s optimistic and practical, handy with a wrench and takes whatever the universe throws at her without batting an eye. Good thing she’s so open-minded—she just so happens to be the Chosen One proclaimed by the prophecy, harboring a mysterious power within.

1 STRIKE A POSE

For the Chosen One, select an active pose. As the red line bends at her torso, it shows that she’s bent forward, stomach compressed as she brings her leg up to get a foot on top of the rock. This position showcases that our hero is both athletic and curious—something has intrigued her enough to clamber over this outcropping, and she’s not going to stop until she knows what’s on the other side.

2 FILL IT IN

Next, it’s time to get the anatomy situated. The calf muscle of the dangling leg will look much different from the leg that’s crouched down, compressed under the thigh. Make adjustments to her body as it moves and interacts with the environment.

3 DRESS YOUR CHARACTER

Start sketching in the clothes and hair. Her pose should suggest movement from the way her leg dangles and her arms push her up. Add a slight sway to her hair to reinforce the sense of motion.

4 ADD DETAIL

Clean up your sketch and add more detail to her hair and clothes. Now’s the time to decide on an expression for her. She is wide-eyed and curious, which works well to reinforce her personality.

5 INK IT

Add depth by inking heavily or filling in shadowed areas to suggest a rough texture to the rocks. If you use crosshatching and uneven short lines, those little strokes look like blemishes, which are handy for old, worn things with little tears, like her scuffed boots.

6 COLOR IT

For her palette, opt for neutral, warm colors. Don’t go with anything too complex or eye-catching; she’s a farm girl with modest tastes. Finally, lay in the colors on top of the inked version, using your palette for inspiration. As always, pay attention to the light source and where the shadows will fall.
