Appendix A. Glossary

This appendix contains a glossary of terms and acronyms used with System Center Configuration Manager and SQL Server Reporting Services. An acronym is typically an abbreviated term formed from the first letter (or first few letters) of several words. Many acronyms are used in Microsoft technologies and System Center, and new ones appear constantly. Often someone unfamiliar with the acronym does not even know the technology area to which it refers.

AD: Active Directory

AI: Configuration Manager Asset Intelligence

Applications: ConfigMgr applications are similar to ConfigMgr 2007 packages; however, applications allow for user-centric deployments with a smart installation for each device type (PC, mobile, and so on.)

APP-V: Microsoft Application Virtualization

BIDS: SQL Server Business Intelligence Development Studio

BITS: Background Intelligent Transfer Service

CAS: central administration site

CCM: Change and Configuration Management

CI: configuration item

CM: System Center Configuration Manager

CM12: System Center 2012 Configuration Manager

CM12R: System Center 2012 R2 Configuration Manager

ConfigMgr: System Center Configuration Manager

DCM: desired configuration management

DP: distribution point

FQDN: fully qualified domain name

FSP: fallback status point

GPO: Group Policy Object

LAN: local area network

MAN: metropolitan area network

MP: management point

MSI: Microsoft Installer

OU: organizational unit

Package: A traditional application deployment method

RB: Report Builder

RBA: role-based administration

RBAC: role-based access control, sometimes referred to as role-based security

RDL: Report Definition Language

RP: Configuration Manager reporting services point

SCCM: System Center Configuration Manager

SCEP: System Center Endpoint Protection

SID: security identifier

SMS: Systems Management Server

SQL: Structured Query Language

SSDT: SQL Server Data Tools, which is the SQL Server development environment. Earlier versions of SSDT included the business intelligence tools.

SSDT-BI: SQL Server Data Tools 2014 Business Intelligence for Visual Studio 2013

SSMS: SQL Server Management Studio

SSRS: SQL Server Reporting Services

SUP: Configuration Manager software update point

SWM: software metering

WAN: wide area network

WMI: Windows Management Instrumentation

WOL: Wake on LAN

WQL: WMI Query Language

WSUS: Windows Server Update Services
