Part 2
Opening the Stanza’s Door: Entering Poetry
The crown of literature is poetry. It is its end aim. It is the sublimest activity of the human mind. It is the achievement of beauty and delicacy. The writer of prose can only step aside when the poet passes.
—W. Somerset Maugham

Poetry, like other arts, has a certain set of skills that a poet must practice to create his or her art. A painter knows when to use a certain size brush and how to use a blade for the proper effects; so, too, the poet must know when to use a metaphor and how to use rhyme well. This part will show you these skills and give you practical advice on how to use them. To engage in the “sublimest” of activities takes knowing the ins and outs of the pieces that make up a poem.
