QUID PRO QUO

No discussion of the definitions of harassment should ignore the concept of quid pro quo. It means “something for something” or “this for that.” Quid Pro Quo is always the example you see in sexual harassment training seminars: it is the one where the male is hanging over the female co-worker's desk, getting far too close to her for comfort. Another example is the television commercial with dialogue that goes something like this:

“You know, with a body like yours, you could really go places around here. Do you know what I mean?”

“Yes. I do know what you mean and this is harassment, and I don't have to take it.”

In both examples the “something for something” that is presented is close to innuendo. You must read between the lines. Was it really harassment? Or was it misinterpreted by the receiver? It doesn't matter! Remember, perception is reality each and every time. In both of these examples, the harasser will need to explain his or her behavior to the investigator of the alleged event.
