EUGENE VALE, a highly respected, award-winning, best-selling author achieved renown as both a screenwriter and novelist. Two of his many film and television scripts received prestigious industry recognition. The Dark Wave was nominated by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for an Academy Award Oscar, and the Writers Guild of America recognized his The Shattered Dream as Best Television Drama. Feature films scripted by Mr. Vale include The Bridge of San Luis Rey, St. Francis of Assisi, Dear and Glorious Physician, and A Global Affair. His teleplays were prolifically produced during television’s “live” golden age and beyond. Although principally a writer, Eugene Vale also worked in the motion picture industry as a producer, director, stage manager, lab worker, and cutter, as well as in distribution, publicity, and finance. All of this wealth of experience, combined with his rootedness to the legitimate stage, is brought together in Vale’s Technique of Screen and Television Writing.
Mr. Vale’s novels include the best-selling modern classic The Thirteenth Apostle, which won numerous domestic and international awards; Chaos Below Heaven, also a best-seller; Some State of Affairs; and Passion Play. A life-member of the Writers Guild of America and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, he also taught screenwriting on a number of prestigious college campuses, including U.C.L.A. and the University of Houston. Eugene Vale’s archives are housed in the Special Collections venue at Boston University’s prestigious Mugar Memorial Library, with the exception of certain materials pertaining to The Thirteenth Apostle, original drafts of which were donated by the author to the U.S.C. Doheny Memorial Library, in a public presentation honoring him there some months after the book’s original publication. Copies of these materials are in the complete Boston collection.
