Chapter Ten. XML Web Services

In this chapter, I discuss how to create and consume XML Web services. An XML Web service is a programmable application component that is accessible using standard Internet protocols, primarily HTTP. The .NET Framework and Visual Studio .NET have a substantial amount of technology that is designed to make it simple to create and consume XML Web services. This chapter gives you a high-level introduction to this technology. Given that the primary purpose of this book is to discuss interoperability and migration, I won't go in depth into Web services in this chapter. My main purpose in this chapter is to provide you with enough background of XML Web services for you to understand Chapter 12 when I discuss migration strategies. Many of these migration strategies involve using XML Web services.
