In putting this section together, my objective was to give you a quick review of major labor market trends. To accomplish this, I included an excellent article and other material that originally appeared in U.S. Department of Labor publications.

The article is “Overview of Employment Projections Through 2018.” It provides a superb—and short—review of the major trends that will affect your career in the years to come. Read it for ideas on selecting a career path for the long term.

“High-Paying Occupations with Many Openings, Projected 2008–2018” shows median earnings for high-paying occupations that also have a large number of openings.

“Large Metropolitan Areas That Had the Fastest Employment Growth, 2008” lists areas of the U.S. that experienced a high rate of growth.
