6. Enhanced Edits

These edit functions are used after building your rough cut with the basic edit functions.

Tip

Some of these functions benefit from the two-up display when using the associated tool. Select the “Show detailed trimming feedback” option in the Editing pane of Final Cut Pro > Preferences.

Trim Tool

Four edit functions appear within the Trim tool: Ripple, Roll, Slip, and Slide. The Trim tool switches to the appropriate edit based on the pointer’s position in the Timeline.

Tip

Tip

When trimming a secondary storyline, achieve consistent results by trimming a clip within the storyline rather than the storyline itself.

Precision Editor

The inline Precision Editor allows you to see the available media for two clips at an edit point. You may either double-click an edit point, or select an edge and then press Control-E to show the editor.

Note

To enter the Precision Editor where a transition exists, double-click an edge of the transition. You may roll an edit point with the transition applied and change the transition’s duration.

Replace

The Replace edit function exchanges an entire Timeline clip for another clip.

1. Drag the new clip over the existing Timeline clip. When the clip highlights, release it.

2. Choose the desired Replace function.

You must reassign or disable Mac OS X 10.6 Spaces or 10.7 Mission Control shortcuts (in System Preferences > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts), or you must reassign the Final Cut Pro Commands.

Retime

Constant and variable speed changes are available in Final Cut Pro. The Retime pop-up menu provides access to speed presets and the Retime Editor (Command-R).

The Retime Editor appears in the Timeline and allows you to adjust a retiming effect.

When working with speed segments, you may change the end frame affected by the retiming without adjusting the speed.
