About the Authors

Eric Corey Freed is an award-winning architect, 12-time author, global speaker, and notorious comedian. As a sought-out lecturer, he has educated more than 300,000 people across all 50 states and 7 countries on issues related to sustainability, high-performance building, and the built environment. His books and videos have been viewed by over a million people worldwide.

As a licensed architect, Eric brings nearly 30 years of experience in helping architects, builders, and owners use sustainability to improve the design and operational savings for thousands of buildings around the country. Companies such as Autodesk, Pixar, Apple, and Lowe’s have hired him to help them incorporate deeper sustainability into their businesses.

Eric is a returning For Dummies author, having written his award-winning Green Building & Remodeling For Dummies (2007) as well as Green Your Home For Dummies (2008). He coauthored another Wiley title, Sustainable School Architecture (2010) as well as Green$ense for the Home: Rating the Payoff from 50 Green Home Projects (from Taunton Press). The latter won the 2011 Outstanding Book Award from the American Society of Journalists and Authors.

Eric has served on the boards and advisory boards of dozens of companies and nonprofits throughout his career, focused on helping them get “unstuck” through strategy, planning, and implementation for next-stage planning. His real skill lies in helping these organizations connect the dots and uncover new opportunities to raise funding, generate revenue, attract customers, and streamline operations. He does this through the lens of sustainability: return on investment, lifecycle costing, carbon accounting, social equity, and supply chain optimization.

Considered a leader in his field, Eric was named by San Francisco magazine Best Green Architect in 2005 and Best Visionary in 2007. In 2012, he was named one of the 25 Best Green Architecture Firms in the United States, and one of the Top 10 Most Influential Green Architects. In 2017 he was named one of Build's American Architecture Top 25, and the following year he was one of Fixr’s Top 200 Influencers in the Construction Industry. He also holds a prestigious LEED Fellow award from the US Green Building Council.

Eric loves talking with people about sustainability and design. For more information on his work and activities, visit circulareconomyfordummies.com or follow him on Twitter: @EricCoreyFreed.

Dedication

Eric: My beautiful wife, Laurie, and I dedicate this book to our powerful daughter, Grayson. The world she’ll inherit will need people who can implement the circularity solutions outlined in this book. I strive to make the world a better place for her. (I also want to thank my coauthor, Kyle, for talking me into writing this book.)

Kyle: I dedicate this book to my parents, Alan and Pamela; my brilliant coauthor, Eric; my loving partner, Manasvi; and my dearest friends, who have all shown nothing but confidence in me. None of this would have been possible without you all.

As teachers and mentors, we are fortunate to work with hundreds of talented students a year. Their questions, enthusiasm, and energy inspire us daily.

The following people must be thanked by name, and you can just assume that they know what they did to deserve mention:

Daniel Overbey, Ball State University

Krista Stark

Bob Leonard

Maureen Addington

Reniera O'Donnell, The Ellen MacArthur Foundation

We would particularly like to thank our editor, Kristie Pyles, for being such a strict taskmaster and keeping us on schedule through a strategy of fear and intimidation. The staff at Wiley Publishing, Inc., is incredibly impressive, and we are appreciative of their support and vision.

This book could not have been possible without our clients, the generous patrons providing the canvas on which we paint.
