Certified Hacking Forensic Investigator (CHFI)

The CHFI comes from the EC-Council, an organization that specializes in anti-hacking, forensics, and penetration testing training and credentials. This certification covers forensic tools, techniques, and procedures necessary to obtain, collect, maintain, and present digital forensic evidence in a court of law.

This class includes an overview and introduction to computer forensics, the computer forensic investigation process, searching and seizing computers, digital evidence, first responder procedures, incident handling, the computer forensic laboratory, understanding hard disks and file systems, digital media devices, CD/DVD forensics, OS boot processes (with coverage of Windows, Linux, and Mac OS), data acquisition and duplication, recovering deleted files and deleted partitions, and much more. This is a thorough and comprehensive curriculum and exam.

EC-Council offers a 5-day training class (as do authorized parties) for the CHFI for around $2,900 (this includes the price of the exam). By itself, the exam costs $250 and is available through both Prometric and VUE testing centers.
