Summary

A project manager should have good technical knowledge in the field of the project being undertaken, but he or she need not be an expert. Because team members are on temporary assignment, the project manager must treat them like volunteers. Because they have other responsibilities outside the project, the project manager must have exceptional leadership skills to keep these “volunteers” on track with project work. Facilitator and leadership skills are particularly important for IPM projects because success depends heavily upon each team member's input in both planning and execution.
