The most common terms used to differentiate shareholders who work in a company from those who do not are active and passive. That nomenclature is contrary to our emphasis on the critical role of ownership in the family firm, independent of the shareholder’s employment status. We will therefore use employed owner and nonemployed owner to differentiate those groups.
