Perhaps the most famous symbol of the American Southwest, the saguaro (pronounced sa-wah-ro) cactus grows only in the Sonoran Desert. The park, which was set up in 1994 to protect this unique species, comprises two tracts of land on the eastern and western flanks of Tucson. Together they cover more than 142 sq miles (368 sq km).

Both sections of the park are equally rewarding. In the western side, the 9-mile (14.5-km) Bajada Loop Drive runs deep into the park on a dirt road, past hiking trails and picnic areas. The Signal Hill Trail leads to ancient Hohokam petroglyphs carved into the volcanic rock. The eastern park has the oldest saguaros, which can be seen along the 8-mile (13-km) Cactus Forest Drive. There are also more than 100 miles (160 km) of hiking trails here. You’ll see an intriguing array of other cacti and desert plants; watch for desert wildlife, including javelinas, coyotes, roadrunners, and Gambel’s quail.

The Mighty Saguaro
The largest species of cactus in the US, the saguaro has a life span of up to 200 years. Those that survive into old age may grow up to 50 ft (15 m) tall and weigh over 8 tons (7,250 kg). Saguaros grow very slowly; the first arms only appear when the plant is 75–100 years old. In late April to May, white flowers appear, which are pollinated by hummingbirds, bees, and bats. In June, mature saguaros produce red fruit, which is harvested by Native Americans and made into jellies and a ceremonial fermented drink.
