When you buy a DVD player and connect it to your home network, the DVD you insert into the drive is capable of storing around 5 Gbytes of data. In other words, it can accommodate three hours of a standard motion picture. This is great; however, there are valid fears within prominent industries associated with the home networking industry that the prevalence of casual piracy could destroy this emerging industry. Realizing this, a number of working groups and committees have been established to develop various methods of safeguarding copyrighted material. This chapter describes these organizations and the emerging technologies that are been used to protect digital content.
