APPENDIX
Workplace and Executive Coaching: A Bibliography from the Scholarly Business Literature
ANTHONY M. GRANT

THIS CHAPTER PRESENTS a bibliography on workplace and executive coaching which is drawn from the scholarly business literature databases. Books, book reviews and non-scholarly articles, magazines, or publications were excluded. The inclusion of this bibliography is intended to be an aid for teachers, researchers, practitioners, and students of coaching. This bibliography does not include citations from the psychology, medical, or education databases. The business literature was selected for inclusion in this book as it is the domain most pertinent to executive coaching, which is the focus of this book’s case studies.
This bibliography is not a definitive overview of the literature on coaching. Readers are referred to the following databases; PsycINFO for psychology-related literature on coaching and to find doctoral dissertations on coaching; Medline for health-related coaching; ERIC for coaching related to education. In addition, there are a number of coaching-focused journals that may not be indexed in the academic databases. These include the International Coaching Psychology Review, published jointly by the Australian and British Psychological Societies (APS and BPS), and the International Journal of Evidence-based Coaching and Mentoring, published by Oxford Brookes University, Oxford, UK.
In December 2005 a literature search was conducted using the broad search term “coaching.” Citations that referred to educational tutoring or coaching were excluded, as were papers that referred to mental health issues. Citations were categorized as follows: A = Primarily a discussion article; E = Primarily an empirical study; Ecase = Primarily an empirical case study.
The use of coaching in workplace or organizations settings to enhance work performance and executive development is increasing in popularity. The number of published scholarly papers in the business literature has escalated since 1996. The first published scholarly paper on coaching in the business literature was published in 1955. Between 1955 and December 2005 there were a total of 393 published papers. (See Figure A.1.) Of these 78 were empirical studies and 314 were articles which discussed coaching, theories of coaching, or application of techniques. (See Figure A.2.) Of the 393 published papers, 318 were published since 1996. Of the 78 empirical studies, 67 were published since 2001. The majority of empirical investigations are uncontrolled group or case studies.

Although coaching-related research is still in its infancy, there is an emerging body of empirical support for the effectiveness of workplace and executive coaching. Clearly, far more empirical research needs to be conducted. Such research should focus on the impact of coaching at both individual and organizational levels, as well as the establishment of validated, evidence-based coaching methodologies.
