MOTION VERSUS PROGRESS | Saying No

Along with prioritizing comes turning down projects that don’t serve your long-term goals. It’s difficult to judge in advance which opportunities will pan out into meaningful or important landmarks in your career. Something that seems like small exposure could lead to an introduction to one person who becomes particularly supportive of your work; likewise, something that seems like a great opportunity can be a waste of time and resources. Very early in my own career I said yes to everything, because I wasn’t sure what would be beneficial or not, and I wanted as much experience as possible. I burned out trying to accommodate everyone. My health was compromised. Now I’m much more selective in the opportunities and assignments that I agree to, which allows me to focus on what I really want to be doing.

When considering an opportunity, look back to your goals list and evaluate if it’s something that moves you closer to or further away from those goals.
