CHAPTER FOUR
PHASE 1: FEASIBILITY
1
T
he purpose of starting your LEED Lab with the Feasibility
Phase is to prepare the sequence of events leading up to
the building assessment. It is necessary for the evalua-
tion of your existing facilities, campus, and to identify the best
candidate for the green building evaluation. It provides the time
to set up a schedule for the remainder of the assessment, associ-
ated parties to tasks, and identies staff, personnel, and even
external consultants (if any) which will assist in a successful few
semesters. While there is no specic step by step guideline to
navigating this phase (unlike accomplishing credits in the Imple-
mentation Phase) there are recommendations to a uid prepara-
tion utilizing checklists and procedures for a successful LEED Lab
beginning.
4.1 Goals
There are primary goals of the course, and secondary goals of
the project which function in tandem to deliver this integrated
learning of the Feasibility Phase. The rst primary goal includes
creating a platform for direct student collaboration with the US
Green Building Council (USGBC), Green Building Certication
Institute (GBCI), and also a variety of campus groups and facili-
ties departments. This provides an opportunity for students to
work in tandem with the university tradesmen and personnel to
identify buildings that require the most effort towards sustain-
able upgrades, and then to diagnose those facilities for sustain-
able potential – pioneering existing facility certication on the
entire campus. At the close of the semester the students attain
another goal of the course by gaining the required experience
necessary to prepare for the LEED O+M professional credential
exam. LEED Lab also meets the goals of industry by equipping
students with the skills, knowledge and expertise needed to be
effective communicators, project managers, critical thinkers,
problem solvers, engaged leaders, and team players.
