DHCP Basics

Maintains a pool of addresses (scope) and assigns them dynamically.
Can assign IP address, subnet mask, default gateway, DNS server, WINS server.
Uses broadcasts and one or more DHCP servers.
Clients only need DHCP enabled; address of server is not required.
Manage with DHCP snap-in.

DHCP Features

Authorization: Windows 2000 authorizes DHCP servers; Windows 2000 Server DHCP service will not start without authorization.
Reservations: IP addresses can be reserved for specific computers.
Options: sends gateway, DNS, and other information along with IP address.
DHCP relay: forwards DHCP requests between subnets when a router is not configured to forward DHCP.
Dynamic DNS updates: DHCP server contacts DNS server to update addresses of clients; Windows 2000 clients can do this themselves.
