Managing Disk Storage

Basic Disks

Disks are divided into partitions.
Primary partition: One active per disk; bootable; one drive letter.
Extended partition: Uses space not used by primary; one per disk; divided into logical drives; not bootable.

Dynamic Disks

Each disk is a single partition; contains one or more volumes.
Simple volumes: FAT, FAT32, or NTFS; can be resized dynamically.
Spanned volumes: Treat 2-32 disks as single volume; data stored sequentially; not fault tolerant.
Striped volumes: Treat 2-32 disks as single volume; data is interleaved between disks; not fault tolerant; faster speed.

Disk Quotas

Can be set for all users or individual users
Set from Quota tab of Disk Properties
Quota Entries window displays quotas; monitors users

EFS (Encrypted Filesystem)

Dynamically encrypts files with public-key encryption.
Files are decrypted dynamically when accessed by valid user.
Set for folders in General tab of Properties.
Decrypt by turning off encryption option.
