IN 2013:

530,000 ATTENDEES

55 FIRST-YEAR EVENTS

36 MUSEUM-ORGANIZED MINI MAKER FAIRES

91% WOULD ATTEND AGAIN

1,700,000 ATTENDEES IN 8 YEARS

NINE YEARS AGO, WHEN WE HOSTED OUR VERY FIRST MAKER FAIRE IN SAN MATEO, CALIF., little did we know that "the Greatest Show (and Tell) on Earth" would become the physical epicenter of a global phenomenon coined the Maker Movement. In 2013, there were 100 Maker Faires across the globe, hosted in diverse locations ranging from big cities like Rome, Tokyo, and New York City to small towns like Loveland, Colorado, and Machynlleth, Wales. Notably, 93 of these Faires were smaller-scale, locally produced "Mini Maker Faires," up from just 56 in 2012.

These Faires are bringing makers together, encouraging collaboration, innovation, sharing of knowledge, and a celebration of all things maker-made. To boot, Maker Faires are providing a viable showcase for local startups, maker businesses, and new products, enabling makers to pursue their passions and make a living doing what they love. We’re seeing more and more products launched and new companies announced at the Faires.

Among last year's Faire organizers, 36 were museums, 20 were nonprofits, and 12 were makerspaces. We've seen organizers go on to influence local education initiatives and affect change in their school districts. With Faires that are in their subsequent years, we're hearing how local makerspaces have grown as a result, new ones have been started, and the local maker community has been mobilized. Emily Smith, who spearheaded the Vancouver Mini Maker Faire, now in its fourth year, shares, "Hosting a Maker Faire meant creating a new community that didn’t otherwise exist, by bringing together many groups."

In 2014, there are 140 Faires projected, and as founder Dale Dougherty said, it looks to be the Year of the Maker.
