The first-of-its-kind collaboration between
an HBCU, West Baltimore’s Coppin State
University, and Open Works, the city’s innovative
community makerspace, is about more than
providing a place for making — although it has
done that for students and neighbors alike.
Rather, its goal has been to foster a “sense of
trust and shared economic destiny” in a city
with a legacy of segregation, crime, political
corruption, and persistent poverty. To identify
why and how this works — and help others
benefit from those lessons — the Coppin
State Ingepreneurship program produced
the study “Turning Makerspaces Into Greater
Places,” assessing Open Works’ impact on local
business, workforce development (in which the
college is deeply rooted), and institutional trust.

Where some schools invest in high-tech tools and
collaborative spaces, others support making in a
more nuanced way. At Auburn University’s Rural
Studio and the University of Utah’s DesignBuild-
UTAH program, prospective architects not only
get lessons in design theory and CAD, but put
their ideas into practice while learning engineer-
ing and construction skills in the field.
Importantly, these programs are community
focused, “educating citizen architects” (as Rural
Studio puts it) and building housing where it is
most needed — for Utah’s program in Bluff, that’s
