Overview of Web Conferencing Capabilities

Office Communications Server 2007 introduces the capability for users, including remote users, to create and join real-time Web conferences that are hosted on internal corporate servers. Users can invite external users from other organizations to participate in the Web conferences they've created. This is similar to the Live Meeting functionality that is now available as a hosted service from Microsoft. Because Office Communications Server 2007 is an on-premise hosted solution, an organization can comply with regulatory and legal requirements for meeting content archiving and retention policies.

Web conferencing supports a rich set of Web-based meeting features:

  • PowerPoint support Users can upload and present slide decks created with Microsoft Office PowerPoint, including animations.

  • Application and desktop sharing Users can share applications among multiple participants and give other participants control of the desktop or application.

  • Whiteboard Users can view a shared whiteboard space for drawing, brainstorming, and capturing ideas.

  • Polling Users have the ability to create questions for and answers to poll participants.

  • Q&A Users can ask and answer questions during a meeting.

  • Chat Users can use Instant Messaging within the context of a meeting.

  • Shared notes Users can edit and share meeting notes with other participants.
