Acknowledgments

Almost everyone I know has had a career he or she enjoyed, but I can’t think of too many people who feel that their career reflected an abiding passion. Not so with the intelligence professionals I’ve known. My friends and colleagues who have served us all through their careers in the intelligence field are passionate about getting the truth and “telling truth to power.” We also benefit from their willingness to give us tips and tell us stories that help us develop some portion of their skill set. With that in mind, I’d like to thank the following contributors to this book who are, or have been, intelligence professionals (in alphabetical order): Elizabeth Bancroft, Ray Decker, Jack Devine, Peter Earnest, Gary Harter, Gregory Hartley, Oleg Kalugin, Eric Maddox, David Major, James O. Pyle, Michael T. Reilly, and Lena Sisco.

Many other professionals in the fields of mental health, medicine, law, journalism, sports, and business—all of them passionate about their work as well—also contributed critical information and insights to this book, and for those thoughts, I thank the following (in alphabetical order): Wendy Aronsson, Harvey Austin, Brian Boitano, Epic Bill Bradley, Trevor Crow, Jeremy Hobson, Dean Hohl, Ryan Holiday, Jim McCormick, Patti Mengers, Ira Neimark, Sue Rotolo, Deborah Schroeder-Saulnier, and Robert L. Saloschin.

I also drew from some outstanding research, as well as riveting interviews and feature pieces on National Public Radio and other media sources. Although I didn’t speak with these people personally, I admire their work and I hope that shows in the context of this book: NPR/Radiolab’s Ellen Horne, NBC’s Brian Williams, psychologist Paul Ekman, social psychologist Amy Cuddy, NPR/Fresh Air’s Terry Gross, and body language expert Janine Driver.

Thanks also to people who helped me in valuable ways such as modeling for a photo, discussing the meaning of truth, introducing me to people in the book, and much more: my mother, Judith Bailey, Mary Ann Saloschin Nichols Hubbard, Neita Saloschin, Karen Pedone, Joan Brandt, Travis Phipps, Kevin Sheridan, Stephanie Danyi, Michael Dobson, Kurtis Kelly, David Kozinski, and Larry Atkins. Also, thanks to my sisters in PEO Chapter IY Estes Park for your unwavering moral support and the occasional glass of wine.

Finally, this book would not be possible without the outstanding Career Press team: Ron Fry, Michael Pye, Adam Schwartz, Kirsten Dalley, Laurie Kelly-Pye, Karen Roy, and Jeff Piasky.

The truth is, if I forgot to mention someone, please know that I appreciate what you did, too!
