The Impact of Rebuilding a Collection Station

Consider a fully realized management station as one of its collection stations goes down. The status of all the devices normally polled by the collection station remain frozen since no updates are available. Suppose the NNM administrator for the collection station deleted the database and rediscovered the management domain (because of a corrupt unrecoverable database, a hard drive failure, or a major hardware upgrade). While the management station reconnects with the collection station as this discovery begins, the entire previous collection of objects are deleted and a new set of objects are imported.

The result is that the management station container for the collection station topology becomes virtually empty and the objects appear in the new object holding area.

This story has a happy ending if the management station’s Internet submap’s customization is periodically saved. Then all the devices in the new object holding area should return to their home container when this customization is imported.
