8.1. PPM COMPONENTS

Let's look briefly at some of the major components and deliverables associated with PPM. To do this effectively, let's consider a high-level process flow (see Figure 8.2). Our example PPM process comprises twelve steps:

  1. Create project proposal

  2. Gate 1: Approve project proposal

  3. Incorporate into budgeting process

  4. End/suspend or replan project proposal

  5. Develop project management plan and business case

  6. Gate 2: Authorize implementation

  7. Analyze portfolio and recommend project priorities

  8. Prioritize project portfolio

Figure 8.2. This twelve-step process flowchart highlights the major deliverables, decision points, and participants in the PPM process.
  9. Implement project

  10. Review project

  11. Realize benefits

  12. Close out project

The PPM process itself is usually managed by the PMO (the project, program, or portfolio management office). Inputs from the PMO throughout the process include information on investment, market, technical, and industry trends, as well as process tools, templates, and guides.
