Chapter 13. IBM Workload Manager for OS/390

This chapter provides an overview the possibities available with extensive use of resource management and serves as a guide to help design long-term resource management goals for application developers. The relatively proprietary nature of the mainframe environment has afforded IBM the opportunity to manage resources effectively because of their ownership of most of the components: computer hardware, operating system, middleware, and applications. This is not the case in open systems, or specifically UNIX, environments. However, as we move forward we will see a great deal of collaboration between the major computer system component vendors to provide an environment with resource management interoperability. Initial evidence of this is the CPU and Network resource management work being done by Sun and bandwidth management with companies like Cisco.
