About the author

Barrie Gunter is currently Professor of Mass Communication and Head of the Department of Media and Communication, University of Leicester. Previously he was Professor of Journalism Studies, Department of Journalism Studies, University of Sheffield. Before moving to the academic world in 1994, he worked as an audience researcher in the broadcasting sector and was Head of Research at both the Independent Television Commission and Independent Broadcasting Authority. He is a psychologist by training with degrees from the University of Wales (BSc), University of London (MSc) and University of East London (PhD). He has published 50 books and more than 300 refereed journal papers, book chapters, non-refereed articles, and technical reports in the fields of media, marketing, and psychology. His major current research interests include the study of digital media developments and their impact upon consumer, social and political behaviour and upon the use of ‘old’ media.
