ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

The material for this book has been on the horizon of my mind for decades inspired by my own work as a photographer, the many questions and discoveries of my students, and the critical thought and imagery of numerous contemporary photographers and writers. As artists, we are never alone and I offer my deepest gratitude for those who have and continue to light my way.

Accordingly, the format of this book and its short essays would not exist without the model provided by Natalie Goldberg in her insightful, humorous, and outstanding book, Writing Down the Bones: Freeing the Writer Within. In reading her brief, discrete essays for the first time over twenty years ago, I wondered: could this format work for an instructional and inspirational book on photography? Decades later, I now want to extend my warmest thanks to Natalie for her enduring words of wisdom contributing to the realization of this book.

Two individuals have been instrumental in my quest for creative expression through the written word—and to them I extend my warm aloha and deep appreciation. Lisa Hagan, my literary agent, has provided enormous support and expertise in navigating the complex intricacies of publishing. And my partner Laura Dunn, the book’s first reader, consistently brings intelligence, grace, and kindness in challenging me toward clear writing, all while finishing her own arduous doctoral dissertation.

I give heartfelt thanks to the photographers and estates whose images grace these essays. Your work lends meaning and depth to what I strive to articulate in words, and I am grateful for your visual clarity as well as your generosity and prompt response to my requests for publishing your work.

Finally, I could not be happier with the collaborative, friendly, and professional team at Rocky Nook, including Managing Director and Publisher Scott Cowlin, Associate Publisher Ted Waitt, Editor Maggie Yates, Project Manager Lisa Brazieal, and Marketing Coordinator Mercedes Murray. You make an author feel like they are coming home and I want to offer one small bit of grateful feedback—you rock!

This book is dedicated to my teachers, students, and you, the reader. I am indebted to all of you. Your encouragement, silent or verbal, and your ongoing creative pursuits helped shape the book you now hold in your hands.
