e society has its International Congress every four years during which a large group of foreign
researchers participate. Besides this general group, there are foreign groups and individuals that
regularly attend SEM meetings and participate actively in the Societys organization and other
tasks. e following people have made very important contributions to the Society.

the University of Southampton. Professor Barton is very well known for her outstanding research
in thermography/thermoelastic stress analysis areas. She was awarded SEM Fellow status in
2016.

and composites; fatigue and fracture mechanics of polymers and composites; general and poly-
mer rheology; polymer processing, composite manufacturing, and processing; new experimental
methods; dynamic and static analysis of materials and structures; adaptronics; multifunctional
and intelligent materials; biopolymers; biomechanics; medical engineering; mechanics of dissi-
pative systems; and environmental engineering. Igor is another of the foreign active participants
of the Society activities. He has an education connection with the U.S. having earned his Ph.D.
at the California Institute of Technology from the Department of Aeronautics and Applied Me-
chanics, his thesis advisor being Wolfgang Knauss. e Mechanics of Time-Dependent Materi-
als Technical Division (MTDM) of the Society for Experimental Mechanics was established in
1993 under the initiative of Knauss and Emri, as a response to the needs of the aviation and au-
tomotive industry for a better understanding of time-dependent structural behavior of polymers
and their composites at extreme thermo-mechanical loading. Dr. Knauss and Dr. Emri were the
first chair and co-chair of the newly established Technical Division. e news was announced
in the January/February 1993 issue of the Experimental Techniques. Since then, MTDM is one
of the most active SEM Technical Divisions and Igor one of the more active participants and
organizers of symposia and other activities of this Technical Division.

Democritus University of race, Greece. It takes many pages to outline all the contributions
Emmanuel has given to the fields of solids mechanics, fracture mechanics, and experimental
mechanics in Europe and the U.S., and all the recognition that he has received for these contri-

digital image correlation, and its methodology and applications. He received the SEM Lazan
Award in 2014.
Luciano Lamberti. Associate Professor of the Politecnico di Bari Diapartimento di Mecca-
nica, Matematica E Management. He is a close collaborator of mine and we have published
many papers together in the topics of optical techniques applied to solid mechanics, papers that
have been presented in the SEM annual meetings since the earlier 2000s and have resulted in
many journal papers. He is a world-renowned authority in structural optimization where he is
57
editor and co-editor of journals in this discipline. Besides his work in experimental mechan-
ics and optimization techniques, he has done seminal work in materials constitutive equations
mathematically representing the results of experimental observations done with optical tech-
niques, atomic force microscope, and micro-indentation procedures. He has applied these de-
velopments to characterize the mechanical properties of biomaterials. He has published more
than 200 papers and has more than 1200 citations of his work. Since the earlier 2000s he has

Award in 2011.
Fabrice Pierron. Professor Pierron is a Professor of Solid Mechanics within the Engineer-
ing and the Environment Department at the University of Southampton. His research interest
lies in the general areas of the mechanics of deformable solids and failure of engineering sys-
tems. Understanding, modeling, and testing this behavior is therefore of primary importance to
many engineering areas such as transportation, health (biomechanics), infrastructure, and mi-
croelectronics. His research deals with a very wide range of materials–from engineering metals
(including welds) to polymers, composites, wood, foams, concrete, tissues, etc. Fabrice became
an SEM Fellow in 2013. Fabrice is currently Editor-in-Chief of Strain.
