56 6. SESA/SEM ACTIVE MEMBERS ABROAD
Igor was Vice President 1998–1999, President 1999, member of the Executive Board
1955–1997, 1996 Section of the Year Award, and 2009 Fellow.
Jose Freire. Professor of the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro School of Engi-
neering and Chairman of the Photomechanics Laboratory. Jose is part of the group of consistent
members of SEM that always shows up at meeting and that serve SEM in different capacities,
i.e., as a member of the Executive Board of the Society, Chairman of Editorial Council of the
Society for Experimental Mechanics (2005–2007), Secretary, Vice Chairman and Chairman of
Optical Methods Division of the Society for Experimental Mechanics (1992–2001), and Pres-
ident of the Society 2004–2005. He is also connected to the U.S. Education System having
received his Ph.D. from Iowa University in 1979. He received the Zandman Award 1998, Fel-
low Award, SEM, 2011, and Tatnall Award, SEM, 2013.
Emmanuel Gdoutos. Professor Director of the Laboratory of Applied Mechanics, Director
of the Section of Design and Construction of Structures Department of Civil Engineering,
Democritus University of race, Greece. It takes many pages to outline all the contributions
Emmanuel has given to the fields of solids mechanics, fracture mechanics, and experimental
mechanics in Europe and the U.S., and all the recognition that he has received for these contri-
butions. Emmanuel is one of the individuals that has consistently attended SEA/SEM meetings
and participated actively in the Society’s governance and service.
President, 2013–2014, Vice President, 2011–2012, Member of the Honors Committee,
2005–2008, Member of the Fellows Committee, 2006–2008, Chairman of the Fellows Com-
mittee, 2007–2008, Member at Large of the Executive Board, 2006–2008, and Member of the
Editorial Board of Experimental Mechanics. Awards of the Society: Fellow Award, 2009 eo-
caris Award, Lazan, 2010 Tatnall Award, and 2011 Zandman Award.
Michael Grediac. Professor Grediac is from the Department of Mechanical Engineering,
Institute Pascal, Clermont-Ferrand University. His research interests include the use of full-
field measurement techniques in experimental solid mechanics. He is a very active member of
SEM and has received from SEM the following awards: 2010 eocaris, 2011 Hetenyi, and
2015 Lazan. He is currently an associate editor of Experimental Mechanics.
Francois Hild. Professor Hild is from LMT, ENS Paris-Saclay/CNRS/University, Paris-
Saclay, France. A steady attendant of SEM, Francois is world renowned for his seminal work in
digital image correlation, and its methodology and applications. He received the SEM Lazan
Award in 2014.
Luciano Lamberti. Associate Professor of the Politecnico di Bari Diapartimento di Mecca-
nica, Matematica E Management. He is a close collaborator of mine and we have published
many papers together in the topics of optical techniques applied to solid mechanics, papers that
have been presented in the SEM annual meetings since the earlier 2000s and have resulted in
many journal papers. He is a world-renowned authority in structural optimization where he is
