First, I want to thank Oak Hammock for providing this opportunity to gather with family and
friends today. I also want to thank our emcee Don Martin, Chuck’s sons, Glenn and Gary Taylor,
and their families for allowing me to be part of this celebration.
As many of you know, I was part of the Taylor’s Series and graduated with my Ph.D. in
eoretical and Applied Mechanics at UIUC in the summer of 1981. In fact, there were three of
us that graduated on the same day in June as part of the last cohort of Chucks Ph.D. students at
UIUC: myself, Frederick Mendenhall, and Albert Kai-Wai Wong. My peers at UIUC included
Fred and Albert, as well as Bill Chao, and the incomparable Michael A. Tafralian, also known
by all of us as the Mad Armenian. Mike Tafralian was a good friend of mine, and he taught me
a great deal about life, since his interests were more about living life to its fullest and not about
his research work. It was one of Chuck’s characteristics that he was able to work with all sorts
of students, including folks like Mike who took over 10 years to complete his degree!
roughout my time at UIUC, I was guided by Chuck and his many friends on the fac-
ulty, including George Costello, Bob Miller, Jim Phillips, Don Carlson, Henry Langhaar, and
Marvin Stippes in TAM and Prof. Langenbartel in Mathematics. Chuck was always looking
out for his students, and his many friends took every opportunity to provide guidance and en-
couragement to me whenever needed.
