Chapter 20
The First Speech

Matt and his family checked into the Naples, Florida, hotel where the all‐company retreat was being held. After dropping off their bags and relaxing in their rooms, it was time for the evening session to start.

Thousands of Turnbow Technologies employees were attending the event, and there was a buzz in the air. Jerry addressed the crowd, telling them how they had just made the biggest sale in the company's history and how proud all the team members should be of themselves. He didn't thank individuals, but teams of people, everyone from the board of directors and technology leaders to entry‐level employees. His words were met with rapturous applause.

Before long, Jerry gave Matt a proper introduction as the new CEO. Matt walked up to the podium, humbled yet proud and confident.

After thanking his grandpa, Matt gave a short but spirit‐filled talk as the new CEO. He thanked everyone for accepting him and helping him grow. His new maturity meant that he was ready for the biggest role in the company. After he got off the stage, he hugged Kendra and his kids. “You will always come first,” he said. “I promise.” Kendra smiled. Matt continued, “I want to be the person you married.”

Kendra kissed him. “Actually, you can be better than that.” Kendra said. Matt laughed and agreed.

After his kids congratulated him, Matt heard a familiar voice behind him. “Randy?! What are you doing here? How did you know about this? It all happened so fast, I haven't even had a chance to come and see you. I wanted to tell you in person.”

“Well, your assistant told your grandpa about our meetings, and it turns out he knows a person or two in the aviation industry,” he responded, giving Matt a wink. “He reached out to our airport director and tracked me down. He flew me here tonight and, honestly, I would not have missed this for anything. It's been so great to see you grow into the excellent leader you've become. You've passed this first test with flying colors. Congratulations!”

Matt was on the verge of tears. Having Randy at this pivotal moment in his life delighted him.

Randy continued, “It has been a privilege to see you get this promotion and I am so glad to be part of it. I'm so sorry that I can't stay longer. I have to be back at the airport in the morning for work. It's been amazing seeing you and I can't wait for my first meeting with Turnbow's new CEO!”

“Wait one second… . I need to ask my grandpa something.”

Jerry was talking with a board member when Matt walked up to him and whispered a question in his ear. Jerry responded with a smile and said, “This is your company now. Moving forward, you make these decisions.”

“I guess you're right,” Matt replied. He walked back over to Randy and told him, “As the new CEO of this company, I want to run it the right way. But I can't do it alone. How would you like to open a Dillon's Pizza inside Turnbow Technologies? We have a food court, and we have over five thousand employees who could use your positive attitude. You could spend a few days each month here and be my leadership coach. What do you think?”

“We mainly have our restaurants in airports and college towns,” Randy stated sternly, then winked. “I'll talk to the owner and see what I can do.” And just like that, another Dillon's Pizza location was birthed right inside Turnbow's food court.

Matt knew that if he was going to operate Turnbow with integrity, he needed the right people around him. Integrity is not a one‐time decision. It is a lifetime decision. It is a decision you make each day for the rest of your life. And life is a whole lot better when you surround yourself with people who choose to live with integrity, hold you accountable, and support you along the way.
